WHO AM I?

My name's Joel. I've been a fitness coach for the last 14 years. After spending over 12,000 hours training people and helping others build gyms, I admitted that most personal training programs and group challenges simply are not setting people up for long-term success.

You invest precious time and money so you can alter something about how you feel about yourself... and maybe you get results... maybe you don't. And the big, lingering problem is that even after having a trainer, people still tell me they don't know what to do.

My goal is to fix that.

People say I see what others tend to miss. And I use old things—history, philosophy, and reflection—to help people see their lives more clearly.

Before becoming a coach, I was studying how humans make meaning—why we believe what we do, and how we change. I had grown up getting teased for my appearance, and for a long time I believed if I could just look better, then I'll feel happier.

But what I discovered during an anthropology field project in my 20s—thanks to philosophies I was exposed to, working out, and the heavy collapsing questions in my personal life—was that changing how you look only gets you so far. There's nothing wrong with just wanting to look better... but there's something else beyond that waiting for you.

If real, lasting change the way you deeply want it is going to happen, the collection of "proofs" about the story you tell yourself has to change.

Humans don't just hit the unsubscribe button that easily. This explains why I would still try the old ways sometimes... and why you have probably found yourself going in circles trying to reach your goals.

I've gotten the results—been big, strong, and shredded—and I've used the formula in this book to help people reshape their bodies and lose up to 120 lbs. But the best part? These people started seeing themselves differently altogether.
